Major Arjun Singh is a dedicated soldier who is brutally murdered by the notorious gangster Naagmani. His wife, Geeta, devastated by the loss, decides to take the law into her own hands. She orchestrates a daring plan by recruiting five hardened convicts from prison, training them into a specialized combat unit to infiltrate Naagmani's fortress and avenge her husband's death.
Army is a revenge-themed action drama that draws significant inspiration from the Hollywood classic 'The Dirty Dozen'. The film's narrative is split into two distinct halves: the first establishes the emotional stakes through the romance and eventual tragedy of Arjun and Geeta, while the second focuses on the recruitment and training of the convicts. Sridevi delivers a powerhouse performance, carrying the film on her shoulders as a woman transformed by grief into a mission-driven leader.
Shah Rukh Khan, appearing in an extended cameo, provides a charismatic presence that makes his character's demise impactful. However, the screenplay by Sanjeev Duggal feels formulaic, and the transition of the convicts from criminals to loyal soldiers happens too abruptly to be entirely convincing. The pacing in the middle sections tends to drag, particularly during the training montages which lack the tension found in similar genre films.
The music by Anand-Milind was one of the film's strongest assets during its release, with songs like 'Main To Hoon Pagal Munda' and 'Ho Gayee Tiyar Hamari Army' becoming quite popular. The background score is typical of 90s Bollywood action—loud and emphatic. While the cinematography by Rajiv Jain and S. Kumar captures the action sequences competently, the film overall suffers from a lack of original storytelling, relying heavily on Sridevi's stardom to bridge the gaps in the script.
Sridevi: Dominating and intense; she is the soul of the film.
Shah Rukh Khan: Charming and energetic in a brief but pivotal role.
Danny Denzongpa: A standard but effective performance as the menacing antagonist Naagmani.
Mohnish Behl: Decent as one of the convicts, providing some emotional depth.
Ronit Roy: Functional in his role as part of the specialized squad.
Strengths
Weaknesses
Raam Shetty's direction is straightforward and focuses on the commercial elements of action and emotion. While he manages to extract good performances from the leads, his handling of the 'squad' dynamics is superficial, failing to give each convict a distinct or memorable personality beyond their basic tropes.
