Bangaram is a reporter at a news channel who dreams of joining an international news network like the BBC. To achieve this, he needs a signature for a character certificate from his boss, Peddi Reddy. However, he accidentally gets entangled in the lives of Peddi Reddy's daughters, Sandhya and Vindhya. When Sandhya tries to elope with her lover Vinay to escape a forced marriage with the brother of a ruthless faction leader, Bhooma Reddy, Bangaram finds himself tasked with protecting the couple and navigating the violent factional feud of the region.
Bangaram was a highly anticipated project as it marked the Telugu debut of director Dharani, known for the high-octane Tamil hit 'Ghilli'. The film is a departure from traditional Telugu commercial cinema of the time because the hero does not have a romantic interest for the majority of the film; instead, he acts as a guardian to the couple in love. The first half is filled with Bangaram's attempts to secure his BBC dreams and light-hearted moments with the family.
The second half shifts into a full-blown action thriller. Dharani’s signature fast-paced 'taking' is evident in the chase sequences and the confrontational scenes with Bhooma Reddy. A unique aspect of the film is the 'anti-love' stance the hero takes initially, which later evolves into self-sacrificing protection. While the action is stylized and the production values are high, the film received criticism for its weak narrative logic and an excessively violent climax involving a mechanical drill. Vidyasagar’s music was a massive hit, particularly the title track and 'Jai Shambo', which remain popular for their energetic beats.
Pawan Kalyan: Dazzles with energy; his portrayal of a goal-oriented reporter was a fresh change. His action choreography and comedic timing in the 'dog' fight sequence were highly praised.
Meera Chopra: Good in her role as the girl in distress, though the lack of a romantic track with the hero was a point of discussion for fans.
Ashutosh Rana: Gives a bone-chilling performance as the sadistic Bhooma Reddy, creating a truly menacing atmosphere.
Reema Sen: Appears in a special role as a rival reporter, adding a bit of competitive spice to the newsroom scenes.
Strengths
Weaknesses
Dharani brought a distinct Tamil-style 'mass' energy to Tollywood. While his visualization of action and songs was top-notch, the emotional depth in the second half was perceived as lacking compared to his previous works.
