Chennai Love Story is a romantic drama set in Chennai that tries to subvert traditional rom-com tropes while offering a blend of light humor and heavy emotions. The film starts off without wasting any time by establishing Nivi's heartbreak and setting a serious tone. However, the mood shifts nicely once Steven Shankar enters the frame. The initial segments seamlessly blend sad emotions with breezy fun, making the first half a very pleasant watch for the audience.

The mid-segment builds up the bonding between the lead pair effectively. Sequences like the temple proposal scene stand out as major highlights, where romance, humor, and emotion come together perfectly. The effortless chemistry between Kiran Abbavaram and Sri Gouri Priya keeps the narrative grounded and charming. The pre-interval and interval sequences deliver a solid high point, setting high expectations for the second half.

Unfortunately, the narrative misses the mark after the key post-interval development. While the post-intermission development starts fine, the characterisation and choices of the main character start to irritate the viewers as the story progresses. The central conflict in the second half lacks strong logic, making the drama feel repetitive and somewhat formulaic.

The second half suffers from 'second-half syndrome' as the plot moves towards a predictable climax in a forced manner. The emotional blocks designed to bring tears feel disconnected because the core conflict is not strong enough to hold the viewer's interest. As a result, the last hour feels dragged and test the patience of the audience.

On the technical side, Mani Sharma's music and background score serve as a strong backbone for the film, elevating several emotional scenes. Viswas Daniel's cinematography gives a bright, colorful, and polished look throughout. Santhosh Naidu's editing is fine in the first half, but could have been much tighter in the second half to cut down the nearly three-hour runtime. Overall, it remains a film with a very good first half and a flawed, melodramatic second half.

Kiran Abbavaram: Delivers a restrained, subtle, and mature performance as Steven Shankar, moving away from his usual hyper-energetic style. His comedic timing and innocence in the first half are very impressive.

Sri Gouri Priya: Acts as the emotional anchor of the film and delivers a brilliant performance portraying grief, heartbreak, and emotional outbursts with great conviction.

Trigun: Does a decent job in an extended guest appearance as the heroine's ex-lover Ajay.

P. Vasu: Gives an adequate performance playing himself in a brief role.
