Karmakhya is a suspense thriller that attempts to blend superstition, occult rituals, and hostage survival elements. The film kicks off explaining the spiritual significance of the Kamakhya Sakthi Peetham, promising an intriguing thriller. However, instead of jumping straight into the core mystery, the narrative takes a detour with unnecessary comedic tracks and slow character setups. The premise is definitely well-intended, but the initial execution struggles to build immediate intrigue.

The first half focuses on establishing the bond between Kaamakhya and her friend Pravallika. The real story picks up only when Kaamakhya visits the secluded house and gets locked inside. While the hostage situation creates a decent sense of tension, the comedy scenes featuring Dhanraj and others fail to land and act as major speed bumps. The pre-interval and interval block present a solid twist that manages to generate some hope for the second half.

In the second half, director Abhinaya Krishna ditches the forced comedy and focuses more on the main plot. The pacing improves slightly as Kaamakhya attempts her escape while revealing the couple's dark intentions involving black magic and human sacrifice. A few twists in the pre-climax and climax segments give the film its much-needed thrilling moments. However, repetitive scenes and a formulaic setup for a potential sequel prevent the climax from delivering a lasting impact.

On the performance front, debutante Samaira Sri delivers an impressive and spirited act, carrying the film well through her expressive eyes and intense dialogue delivery. Senior actress Abhirami is fierce and intense as Sarojini, bringing serious weight to her negative-shaded role. Samuthirakani makes his presence felt in the later portions as the police officer. On the downside, the comedy actors like Dhanraj and Rocket Raghava are saddled with weak writing that does not serve the plot.

Technically, the movie has a few highlights despite its limited budget. Kushender Ramesh Reddy's cinematography uses moody lighting and clever camera angles to create a claustrophobic atmosphere inside the house. Gyaani's background music is a big asset, elevating the suspense and adding a divine yet eerie tone to key scenes. Editing by Sree Varaprasad is adequate but could have been much tighter in the first half to eliminate lag. Production values are decent for this scale.

Overall, Karmakhya turns out to be a below-average thriller that has an interesting central concept but suffers from uneven execution. Lead performances by Samaira and Abhirami, along with a decent background score, stand out as positive aspects. However, the forced comedy, slow narrative pace, and repetitive moments drag the experience down. If black magic rituals were supposed to work magic on the box office, this script certainly needed a few more spells of tight writing.
