📖 Story
The story revolves around a 200-year-old curse haunting the Mahendragiri zamindar family, where a male member mysteriously dies every 33 years. Siddharth, an atheist YouTuber who uncovers fraudulent activities, visits the village with his family. He decides to investigate the mysterious deaths to uncover whether it is a genuine divine curse of Goddess Varahi or a human conspiracy taking advantage of people's beliefs.
Mahendragiri Varahi tries to be a gripping mystic thriller, but ends up looking like a repeated template of Subrahmanyapuram and Murari. The director attempts to mix divine curse elements with rational thinking, but the narrative struggles due to predictable beats and convenient writing. If you have already watched similar mystery films, watching this one might give you a strange sense of deja vu throughout.
The first half begins on a promising note by establishing the curse and mysterious family deaths. Siddhu Jonnalagadda makes a notable cameo appearance that builds initial curiosity and sets the foundation. Sumanth’s entrance as a scam-busting atheist adds some initial energy. However, the pacing becomes a bit sluggish after the setup, though the interval block manages to pull back the audience's interest with a decent twist.
The second half fails to maintain the momentum and starts dragging significantly. The flashback episode slows down the narrative and tests the patience of the viewers. While there are a couple of unpredictable twists near the pre-climax, the way they are revealed lacks real impact. Furthermore, the divine intervention arriving conveniently at the end without logical explanation makes the climax feel rushed.
Sumanth gives a sincere and subtle performance, though the role offers nothing new compared to his previous mystery roles. Siddhu Jonnalagadda and Aishwarya Rajesh do well in their brief cameo appearances. Brahmanandam and Vennela Kishore get roles with twist elements, but their character writing lacks depth. The screenplay and direction by Santosh Jagarlapudi are pretty average, failing to create sustained atmospheric tension.
Technically, the film leaves a lot to be desired for a mystery thriller. Anup Rubens delivers an acceptable background score with a recurring theme, but it feels repetitive. Cinematography by Pratap R Krishna is decent with realistic visuals, but the overall experience is pulled down by substandard VFX and uninspiring CGI work. Editing by Junaid Siddique should have been much sharper to trim down the slow second half.
Overall, Mahendragiri Varahi turns out to be a routine and monotonous mystery thriller. The film has a few decent moments, particularly in the opening setup, interval, and a few climax twists, but it suffers from logical loopholes and weak technical output. It ends up as an average to below-average watch that might satisfy die-hard mystery fans, provided they do not expect a fresh experience.
Sumanth: Gives a subtle and sincere performance as an atheist investigator, though the role is very similar to his past work.
Siddhu Jonnalagadda: Makes a strong impact in a key cameo role with good screen presence and dialogue delivery.
Aishwarya Rajesh: Delivers a neat performance in her guest appearance during the key portions.
Meenakshi Goswami: Fairly decent in a limited screen time role as Aadya.
Vennela Kishore: Provides decent support as the hero's friend with a small surprise element.
Brahmanandam: Okay as the temple priest, though his talent is underutilized.
