Makutam marks the directorial debut of actor Vishal Krishna, but unfortunately, the movie feels like traveling two decades backward in time. Positioned as a mass action drama, the plot heavily borrows from the classic Baasha and Mirchi templates where a father or son hides his powerful background to live a quiet life. While the core emotional conflict had potential on paper, the treatment is completely outdated. Director Vishal relies on stale commercial tropes that lack any fresh elements to keep the audience invested.

The first half begins by establishing Krupa's middle-class lifestyle, his struggle to manage expenses, and his family setup. However, these scenes feel very flat and lack genuine charm. The pacing remains sluggish as the narrative plods toward the Ooty trip. Even the pre-interval attack on the family and the subsequent interval block, which are supposed to be high-voltage emotional moments, fail to create a strong impact due to weak staging and predictable storytelling.

Things pick up slightly in the second half with the entry of Linga's character and the elevation of the port mafia conflict. However, the momentum dies down very quickly as the film drags on relentlessly. The second half is overly stretched with routine hero-villain confrontations and heavily dramatic scenes. The climax action sequence tries to do something different by involving female fighters, but it turns out to be unintentionally funny rather than exciting, leaving the viewers totally disconnected.

In terms of performances, Vishal handles multiple looks with good energy, but his portrayal of the older father character Linga feels unnatural. Dushara Vijayan and Anjali deliver decent performances within their limited roles, while character actors like Jayaprakash, Thambi Ramaiah, and John Vijay carry out their assigned parts with over-the-top reactions. The character writing lacks depth across the board, making it difficult to sympathize with anyone on screen.

On the technical front, Richard M. Nathan and Abinandhan Ramanujam provide decent cinematography, capturing the action sequences cleanly. However, G. V. Prakash Kumar's music and background score are a major letdown, with loud and jarring BGM during fight sequences that irritates the ears. Editing by N. B. Srikanth is below par, leaving many unnecessary scenes intact. The production values from Super Good Films are lavish, but poor VFX work hurts the visual appeal.

Overall, Makutam is a routine and disappointing action drama that fails to offer anything new. What works slightly are the basic emotional core and decent production values, but what fails badly is the outdated script, dull screenplay, loud BGM, and tedious second half. If you are expecting a modern action entertainer from Vishal the director, you might end up needing a crown-sized headache medication instead. It is best to skip this one.
