Odiyan is a fantasy drama set in the backdrop of rural Kerala, revolving around the legend of Odiyans—mysterious shape-shifting assassins who use dark magic to terrorize villages. The story follows Manikyan, an Odiyan, who returns to his village after years, confronting his past, love, and the societal stigma attached to his identity. The narrative explores themes of folklore, love, betrayal, and redemption, blending myth with human emotions.
Odiyan attempts to weave folklore and fantasy into a cinematic spectacle, with a story that oscillates between myth and reality. The screenplay is ambitious but uneven, with a gripping first half that sets up the mystery and emotional stakes effectively. However, the second half suffers from pacing issues and an over-reliance on visual effects, which somewhat dilute the narrative impact.
The film's pacing is deliberate initially, allowing the audience to immerse in the rustic setting and the protagonist's backstory, but it loses momentum post-interval due to repetitive sequences and a convoluted climax. The songs are situational and blend well with the narrative, though none stand out as chartbusters. Sam C S’s music and background score add a haunting and atmospheric layer, enhancing the film’s mystical tone and complementing the visuals effectively.
Cinematography by Shaji Kumar captures the lush landscapes and period settings beautifully, elevating the film's visual appeal. Despite its technical strengths, the screenplay's inconsistency and the film's length may test viewer patience, but Mohanlal’s charismatic presence and the film’s ambitious scope make it a notable attempt in Malayalam cinema.
Mohanlal: Powerful and commanding as Manikyan, delivering a nuanced portrayal of a complex folk hero.
Manju Warrier: Strong and emotive, providing a grounded counterpoint to the fantasy elements.
Prakash Raj: Effective in a pivotal antagonist role, adding gravitas to the conflict.
Strengths
Weaknesses
V A Shrikumar Menon delivers a visually ambitious film that attempts to blend folklore with mainstream cinematic elements. While his vision is grand and the film is technically polished, the direction struggles with narrative coherence and pacing, especially in the latter half.
