📖 Story
Major Jaidev Rajvansh is a decorated Indian Army officer who successfully captures the dreaded terrorist Abrush. While Jaidev is hailed as a national hero, his childhood friend Anjali is deeply in love with him. However, Jaidev falls in love with Pooja, the daughter of a fellow officer. Heartbroken and jealous, Anjali is manipulated by Abrush's associates into stealing a secret military code. This act leads to Jaidev being court-martialed and branded a traitor. The story follows Jaidev's perilous journey to clear his name and stop Abrush from executing a deadly mission against India.
Pukar is a high-octane patriotic thriller that successfully blends military action with a complex emotional narrative. The film's strength lies in its screenplay, which balances the tension of espionage with a tragic romantic triangle. The first half is engaging, focusing on Jaidev's heroism and the developing jealousy of Anjali, while the second half transforms into a gritty survival drama as Jaidev goes rogue to prove his innocence.
A.R. Rahman's music is a monumental asset to the film, with 'Kay Sera Sera' and 'Sunta Hai Mera Khuda' becoming iconic tracks. The background score significantly enhances the cinematic experience, particularly during the high-stakes action sequences. The cinematography, handled by a team of masters including Santosh Sivan and Ashok Mehta, gives the film a grand, polished look that was ahead of its time for Bollywood in 2000.
The pacing is generally tight, though the transition from a romantic drama to a military thriller occasionally feels jarring. However, Rajkumar Santoshi's direction ensures that the stakes remain high throughout. The film's exploration of themes like loyalty, betrayal, and national duty provides a depth that elevates it above standard action fare.
Anil Kapoor: Delivered a powerhouse performance that earned him the National Film Award for Best Actor; he portrayed the discipline of a soldier and the vulnerability of a framed man with equal conviction.
Madhuri Dixit: Exceptional as Anjali, showcasing a wide range of emotions from obsessive love to deep regret; her dance performance in 'Kay Sera Sera' remains legendary.
Danny Denzongpa: Menacing and sophisticated as the antagonist Abrush, providing a formidable challenge to the protagonist.
Namrata Shirodkar: Graceful and effective in her role as Pooja, providing the necessary catalyst for the film's central conflict.
