📖 Story
Anvesh, a wannabe entrepreneur in Hyderabad, plans to launch a dating app named Romanchakam with his group of techie friends. To understand women's mindsets for app features, he creates a profile on a dating platform and connects with Mythili, a girl from Chennai. After building a close bond through long chats, Mythili suddenly blocks him everywhere. Later, when she unexpectedly arrives in Hyderabad to meet him at a friend's flat, she mysteriously goes missing. How Anvesh and his friends search for her, deal with a quirky police officer, and resolve the confusion forms the rest of the story.
Romanchakam comes with an ambitious attempt to combine buddy comedy, romantic comedy, and thriller elements into a single package. Presented by Sandeep Reddy Vanga, the movie aims high on paper with its Gen Z startup setting. However, the film depends heavily on random dialogue-driven comedy blocks rather than a solid script, making it a hit-or-miss fare.
The first half starts on a very flat note, struggling to establish proper conflict or character depth. The initial scenes of dating app interactions and Chennai trips feel silly and poorly written. The pacing drags significantly during the first hour, but the pre-interval and interval sequence centered around Mythili's sudden disappearance manages to save the day with a sudden burst of hilarious gang comedy.
The second half tries to push the thriller-comedy angle through a missing girl investigation involving a eccentric police officer. While the police investigation track goes overboard and drags unnecessarily for twenty minutes, the film regains momentum during the climax. The pre-climax and climax wedding confusion scenes generate solid laughs, finishing the movie on a lighter note.
Sumanth Prabhas looks comfortable in an urban role and delivers his lines with ease, though his hero-centric styling feels a bit out of place for a buddy comedy. Narendra Ravi completely steals the show with his outstanding comic timing and carries the maximum humor. Ananthika Sanilkumar looks pretty but gets a half-baked, poorly written character that lacks clear direction. Director Venu Gopal Reddy succeeds in writing funny one-liners, but stumbles badly in screenplay structure.
On the technical front, Vasuki Vaibhav provides refreshing melodies, though they feel placed out of situation due to weak romantic depth. Pavan Kumar Pappula's cinematography is vibrant, relying on close-up shots. The editing, also handled by director Venu Gopal Reddy, is a major drawback as it desperately needed sharper cuts in both halves to fix pacing issues.
Overall, Romanchakam ends up as an average youthful comedy that relies strictly on isolated funny blocks rather than a cohesive story. The buddy group banter and Narendra's comedy work well, but the weak romance, lack of tension, and sluggish narrative pull it down. It is worth a watch if you just want a few casual laughs without expecting any depth.
Sumanth Prabhas: Delivers an effortless and casual performance in an urban role with good dialogue delivery.
Narendra Ravi: Steals the show completely with his brilliant comic timing and natural humor.
Ananthika Sanilkumar: Looks pleasant on screen but is severely limited by a half-baked character arc.
Upendra Limaye: Generates a few laughs as a cop, but his act turns overly loud and stretched.
