The film follows two parallel love stories set in different eras. In the present, Michael Velayudham, a flirtatious chef in Cape Town, undergoes a pragmatic breakup with Meera but finds himself unable to move on. Simultaneously, he hears the story of Arjun Palwai from a restaurant owner in Varanasi. Arjun was a man from the 1970s who pursued his love with unwavering traditional values. The narrative explores how Michael learns the true meaning of commitment by reflecting on Arjun's soulful journey.
Teen Maar is an official remake of the Bollywood hit 'Love Aaj Kal', adapted for the Telugu audience with a heavy focus on Pawan Kalyan's dual characterization. The film succeeds in maintaining the classy, urban vibe of the original while adding the necessary 'mass' elements through the character of Arjun Palwai. The first half is breezy and stylish, focusing on the contemporary relationship dynamics in South Africa, while the flashback sequences set in 1970s Varanasi provide a grounded, emotional contrast.
Trivikram Srinivas’s involvement in the screenplay and dialogues is palpable, especially in the philosophical undercurrents of the conversations. The pacing is deliberate and may feel slow to those expecting a high-octane actioner, but it works for the romantic-drama genre. The transition between the two time periods is smooth, though some felt the 'soul' of the original was slightly diluted to accommodate the star's image.
Mani Sharma’s music is a standout feature, perfectly capturing the different moods of both eras. 'Gelupu Thalupule' became an anthem for heartbreak and hope, while the background score effectively distinguishes between the modern and retro settings. Technically, the film is rich, with Jayanan Vincent’s cinematography providing high aesthetic value to both the foreign locales and the vintage Indian backdrop.
Pawan Kalyan: Showcases great versatility; he is ultra-cool as Michael and remarkably grounded as Arjun Palwai. His subtle variations in body language are commendable.
Trisha Krishnan: Delivers a mature and dignified performance as Meera; her chemistry with Pawan is sophisticated and natural.
Kriti Kharbanda: Sweet and effective in her brief role as the traditional love interest in the flashback sequences.
Paresh Rawal: Provides a solid supporting presence, acting as the bridge between the two generations.
Strengths
Weaknesses
Jayanth C. Paranjee remains faithful to the source material while trying to balance the class and mass appeal. His direction is slick and stylish, though the film occasionally loses grip during the emotional transitions in the latter half.
